PERSONAL attack alarms are to be handed out for free by Redditch police following a spate of sex attacks across the town.

A total of six women have been indecently assaulted and police are investigating the possibility the attacks could be linked.

No more assaults have been committed since the Advertiser reported the attacks last week and police are following up a number of leads from the public.

Crime Risk Manager Pc Stan Baker said: "These alarms can be used when anyone feels they are at risk.

"As the nights draw in, some people can feel more vulnerable than in the summer and we're hoping these alarms will help. They will be free and given out on a first come, first served basis."

Sixty alarms have been bought and will be handed out from the front desk at the police station in Grove Street from today.

Pc Baker said: "The alarms help but there are other steps people can take to protect themselves."

He urged anyone who is attacked to shout "fire" rather than "help" as it would attract more attention.

Women should walk in well-lit, busy areas and try to look confident and look like they know where they're going to cut the risk of assault.

"If you feel confident, a stern and loud 'take your hands off me' may make the person stop and will alert other people to their behaviour," said Pc Baker.

"Try to let someone know where you are going and when you will be home and if possible, arrange your transport home before you go out for the night."
