AN old established Bromsgrove building firm was happy to help when the wind blew out of the sails of the flagship exhibit at a town museum.
Staff at the Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings became concerned when the huge oak windshaft, which carries the sails on the 19th century windmill, became misaligned from its bearing. The problem was spotted during filming for a forthcoming Carlton TV series called Sky High Again.
Building firm Weavers, based on Worcester Road, came to the rescue by providing the staff and specialist hoisting equipment to realign the shaft bearing and restore the mill to its full working order.
Steve Bishop, Weavers' plant and transport manager, said that jacks were used to prop up the whole of the mill, while the delicate task was carried out
"We are always happy to help out at the museum," he added.
The Danzey Green post mill, which came from Tanworth-in-Arden, was rescued and dismantled in 1969. It is a favourite with the thousands of visitors who flock to the unique museum each year.
Seven years later, after being carefully re-erected and restored, its giant sails once again were turned into the wind to set the huge millstones rolling.
John Fox, Avoncroft's miller, said: "We were absolutely delighted Weavers were able to step in and help us."
