MATT Birch's luckless start to the season has gone from bad to worse after breaking his right leg.
The Bromsgrove RFC First XV fly half suffered a stress fracture and possible ankle ligament damage during training at the club's Finstall Park ground last Thursday.
It was Birch's first full training session since being trapped between two lorries at work in September and had been meant to prepare him for a comeback last weekend.
He now faces at least seven or eight weeks on the sidelines although the extent of the ligament damage won't be known until he is out of plaster.
Birch also missed a lot of last season with a troublesome back problem.
Bromsgrove host Towcestrians in the Powergen Intermediate Cup Second Round this Saturday (3pm). Droitwich Spa travel to Burton for their tie.
