BROMSGROVE RFC First XV turned in a commanding performance to beat Newbold-on-Avon at Finstall Park.

Dean Ball named an unchanged side from last week's victory over Aston Old Edwardians and it paid off.

And the coach has re-assessed recent performances and is pleased with the way the team is going about their task.

He said: "We don't give the opposition enough justice to start with. Teams raise their game against us and we seem to forget that and although we have been saying we haven't been playing as well as we can, we are grinding them down.

"We are weathering their best and come the later stages we start to open out."

The hosts struggled to exert first half dominance and were soon 3-0 down to a penalty well struck by Newbold captain Gary Fletcher.

Bromsgrove's first break came when Lee Wainwright charged down a clearance deep within the Newbold half. Wainwright followed through and was able to collect the ball and score the first try. James Lloyd-Jones converted for a 7-3 lead.

After the break Bromsgrove lifted their performance. With stronger tackling and fine individual performances they stretched their lead when Richard Trigg was on hand to finish off a flowing backs move to score in the corner.

This was followed with a magnificent solo run by full back Lloyd-Jones. He picked up the ball 15-yards from his own try line, broke through Newbold's defensive line and ran the length of the pitch. The run was ably supported by young second row and man of the match Carl Bradley. Lloyd-Jones struck a superb conversion from the touchline for 19-3.

Newbold were only able to score one further penalty kick throughout the second half as Bromsgrove ran in two further tries from skippers past and present Andy Bridge and Dave Clark.

Clark finished off an excellent series of passing play when he spotted a gap in the defence and ran in from more than 25 yards.

Bridge's try came from a five-man line out. Fly half Danny Malin threw a miss pass to Dave Wilkinson who slipped the ball to Bridge to finish clinically.
