THE music of ancient Africa comes to The Barber Institute in Edgbaston next Wednesday when Nzamba Lela, the Aka Pygmies of Central Africa, visit as part of their first UK tour.
The concert, with contemporary pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, showcases the songs of the Aga Pygmies tribe, described as 'extraordinarily complex, combining multiple melodies and rhythms to create a rich web of voices.'
Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard gives performances of Gyorgy Ligeti's etudes. Ligeti was introduced to the pygmies' music in 1980 and his fascination with it is evident in much of his later work.
Tickets for the concert, which begins at 7.30pm, are priced £10 (concessions available) from the box office on 0121 414 7333 or online at www.barber.org.uk
