A RUBERY rock group struck the right notes in a battle of the bands contest and won its first ever prize.

Debree scooped top honours in the Alvechurch competition at the end of last month.

The heavy metal act, featuring three Waseley Hills High School students, beat off stiff competition from seven other youth bands as part of the Alvechurch Alight Festival.

With Josh Roberts on drums, David Brown on lead guitar and bassist Adam Bennett, the group names Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath as their main inspirations.

Fourteen-year-old Adam said: "We were really pleased to win the prize, especially as we were the youngest group to take part in the event."

The talented trio scooped prize money of £60, which they shared between them and spent on personal treats.

"As it was our first competition win we decided to share the money and spend it on whatever we like. But if we win anything else then we'll invest it in the band and buy more equipment," said Adam.

The three 14-year-olds met at Lickey Hills Primary School and got together two years ago. Debree jams at the Rich Bitch studios in Selly Oak, Birmingham.

"We really hope to make a career out of music," Adam added.
