A DRIVER stopped by police for speeding gave another man's name and address, a court heard.

But the false details came to light when an officer turned up on the man's doorstep and realised he had not been at the wheel, said Adam Western, prosecuting.

Blackie Smith, aged 21, of Aston Close, Ledbury, admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He was ordered to carry out 75 hours of community work and pay £325 court costs.

Judge John Cavell said his actions had been "a piece of serious stupidity".

Worcester Crown Court heard that Smith was stopped in Ledbury in May this year. The bogus details he gave meant an innocent man was summonsed to appear before Hereford magistrates, said Mr Western.

By chance, the same officer who stopped Smith in his Renault Clio also called at the other man's home.

Brett Stevenson, defending, said Smith was a building worker earning between £350 and £400 a week.
