The first outing of the season to the River Wye took place on Sunday when Malvern United Angling Association members travelled to Bredwardine.
Despite the lack of rain, the river was carrying more water than in some previous years but an overnight frost could have slowed sport down.
The Wye is renowned for its large shoals of dace and it was these small hard fighting fish that made up the bulk of the catches.
Jerry Thomas chose a swim upstream of the bridge and tackled it with stick float and caster tactics in a nice glide about a rod length from the bank. Despite a slow start Jerry proceeded to land 23-8-0 of dace in his winning haul.
Second place went to match secretary Ian Goddard who tried his luck much further upstream in the deeper water and was rewarded with a 13-5-0 net of dace and small chub using waggler and maggot.
Float maestro Ray Bishop chose a swim close to the bridge, netting 12-9-0 of dace on the stick float for third.
This Sunday is the Roy Bouston Cup, this year it's the turn of Hanley Castle to host the event on their stretch of the River Severn.
Ellen Reynolds, of Alan's Tackle, Worcester, has kindly donated £100 of tackle vouchers for the winners. The draw is at 8am, fish 9-2pm.
