"EATING a rainbow" was the unusual but important message when the Redditch branch of the Stroke Association marked National Stroke Awareness Week.

In this case, eating a rainbow meant getting the message across to everyone about the need to eat a wide range of fruit and vegetables to reduce the risk of having a stroke.

The Redditch branch, run by support worker Sandra Langford, meets fortnightly at Community House, Easemore Road, from 10am-noon on Thursday.

Mrs Langford explained eating a wide range of fruit and veg could reduce the risk of having a stroke, as well as playing a role in other health areas.

"It is recommended adults and children eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day," she said.

"By increasing the amount eaten to reach this by just one or two per day, it's possible to reduce the risk of a stroke by 40 per cent."

She added: "Strokes are one of the UK's biggest killers and the single greatest cause of adult disability in this country.

"More than 300,000 people are affected by a stroke at any one time with more than 130,000 people suffering a first stroke each year.

"The group is for people with communication problems following a stroke.

"With the help of volunteers, we have a programme of work to help patients regain their lost skills.

"We also have speakers, do armchair exercises and go on outings."

Mrs Langford said: "Without the help of volunteers, none of this would be possible so if anyone can spare a little time and would like to help those who have suffered a stroke, please contact me."
