AN ALL-WEATHER sports pitch could be built in a Rubery park using cash from the sale of Callowbrook school.

Bromsgrove district councillor Peter McDonald (Lab-Waseley) is adamant the £65,000 left over from the sale of the former Callowbrook school site should be used to improve village recreation facilities.

He thinks the money would be well spent building an all-weather sports pitch, featuring facilities for football and basketball in St Chad's Park.

"In Rubery there are no community facilities for residents over the age of about eight and an all-weather pitch would be suitable for everyone to use," he said.

"The park already has changing rooms so it would be an ideal place for a sports pitch."

Worcestershire County Council, along with Cllr McDonald, helped ensure that developers contributed £125,000 from the site of the Callowbrook school at the end of 2000.

The county council allocated £60,000 of the total sum to Waseley Hills High School to improve its sports hall. The rest of the money has been put into the hands of the district council.

"I did not want to see the rest of the money go into the district council pot and spent elsewhere in Bromsgrove. It must be constructively spent in Rubery," added Cllr McDonald.

Fellow Labour councillors Dave McGrath (Beacon) and Colin Wilson (Waseley) have joined Cllr McDonald's campaign.

They have written to council leisure chief Robbie Hazelhurst requesting the cash be used to build the all-weather pitch. They hope to see the development in place within a year.
