FOR a long time now, I have believed that speed traps, such as the one in City Walls Road, Worcester, are purely used as a "revenue earner".

Drivers, knowing that cameras and traps are being used, concentrate more on their speedometers to keep within that 30mph limit. That in itself is a distraction, let alone the threat of a £60 fine and three points.

We should have more 30mph and 40mph discs at the roadside to bring home to drivers the speed restrictions.

On June 13 this year, my wife died from terminal cancer and two days later, my daughter, son and I drove to George Crump, Funeral Directors in Hanbury Road, Droitwich to take the burial clothes to the chapel of rest. My daughter was driving as we left the chapel and she was flashed doing 37mph on the A38.

I wrote a letter of appeal, together with the £60 fine and my daughter's licence explaining how traumatised we were all feeling at that time and I ended the letter with this appeal: "I leave it to your conscience to reconsider this fine and points."

Well, their consciences came down in favour of the fine and yet another revenue earner.

I totally agree with 20mph speed limits near schools, but in our case, seven mph over the limit was in no way dangerous. I would like to hear other drivers' reactions to this.
