DEAR EDITOR -- Miss Robinson's (RSPCA) letter (September 24) unfortunately continued the highly selective information from the RSPCA in respect of hunting with dogs.

Polling used to consistently show a majority supporting a ban on hunting but it has not done so for well over a year, as the public become better informed of the issues and less lead by highly biased organisations.

Polling now shows a majority do not favour a ban on hunting and a recent poll showed that only three per cent thought the government should be wasting time on this issue when there is so much else to do.

Hunting with dogs removes the sick and old foxes, that otherwise prey on lambs, chickens and other farm and domestic animals.

A fit fox will almost always outrun hounds and get away. Shooting those foxes chased into a 'killing area', as the enlightened Scottish Parliament chose to insist on, has resulted in a significantly increased number of foxes killed, as the fit ones cannot get away.

Shooting (rifles or shotguns) can be difficult, is inherently more dangerous and also does not discriminate between the fit and the old fox.

It is a great shame that the RSPCA, which does much good work in its charitable guise, should have taken on this political role and, learning from its political masters, decided to distort the facts and figures to achieve its own ends.
