Worcester St. Johns Cycling Club junior section has had considerable success in the season-long Halesowen track league held on a 440 metre velodrome.

The weekly fields of 20 or more U12s were dominated by Halesowen, Bromsgrove and Solihull clubs but four Saints riders took more than their fair share of honours.

In the A league Dan Staines of Northwick Manor Junior School regularly took top three places in the endurance events and is looking to improve his sprinting skills next year for better short distance results.

He achieved fourth place overall with 46 points from 29 races despite missing the last two meetings due to injury following a high speed tumble in a one mile handicap event.

Jonathon Grayson notched up several first places in handicap races and sprints over the season, finishing eighth with 31 points from 23 races.

Both riders excelled in the 'Devil take the hindmost' events, during which the last rider is taken off the track on each lap.

Staines and Grayson showed great ability to use their brains as well as their legs to judge their efforts perfectly, frequently out-manoeuvred stronger riders for top three placings.

In the B league Emma Grayson started her first year of competition well and took third place for riders aged under eight and ninth place overall, while Mitchell Warburton from Northwick completed the team with 24th in the overall championship.

The top spots in the A and B leagues were taken by Thomas Gregory and John Cooper of Halesowen Athletic and Cycling Club.

With the track season over, the juniors are looking to keep their fitness and skills tuned over the winter by riding in the West Midlands cyclo-cross league events.
