THERE has been a positive response from residents to a new household recycling scheme.

More than 1,800 questionnaires were sent out to those taking part in the scheme, which started in May, and more than a third were returned.

The results suggest 94 per cent were taking part in the scheme and 64 per cent said it had reduced the amount of rubbish they bin.

Those not taking part in the scheme said they did not have enough rubbish to recycle.

Council environmental services manager Guy Revans said: "The response is very good and shows the majority of residents are pleased with the new household recycling collection scheme.

"We're now going to use these results to develop the household recycling collection scheme further before we extend it to other areas in the borough."

The scheme includes the collection of paper and thin card, glass bottles and jars, cans (including drink, food, aerosols), foil and textiles. For more details, call the recycling hotline on 534190.
