TASTY food, top hygiene and excellent management skills have helped a Worcester chip shop scoop a top award.

The heat was on and temperatures were rising as fryers were fired up in a bid to be crowned best fish and chip shop in the south Midlands.

It was Rose Avenue Fish Shop, in Rose Avenue, which emerged from this intense heat, battered the opposition and claimed the prestigious accolade.

The Tolladine shop is now battling to become the overall regional Midland champion, which could lead on to the national grand final, in London, in January 2004.

Shop manager, Stelios Xiourrouppas said team- work and natural produce had been just two of the keys to their success.

"The judges were impressed by our high standards of hygiene, how the shop was run and of course the tastiness of our fish," he said.

"Some shops use a batter mix for cheapness, but we only have pure natural batter, which I think really impressed them."

The Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Competition, now in its 16th year, has been organised by the Sea Fish Industry Authority.
