TWO lanes of the M5 were closed for nearly three hours last night causing massive tailbacks after a three-vehicle pile-up.

The incident happened at 6pm, when an armoured prison van - with no prisoners inside - and two cars were in collision, leaving the van on its side in the central reservation and its driver trapped.

Fire crews cut the roof to release the man, and he was rushed to the accident and emergency department of Worcestershire Royal Hospital with breathing difficulties and back pains.

Ambulance

A passenger was also taken by ambulance to the hospital for a check- up.

Traffic was immediately restricted to one lane southbound, causing tailbacks all the way from the crash, which happened mid-way between junctions 4A and 5, back to junction 4.

Spilled diesel had to be cleared from the road and it was fully re-opened at 8.45pm.

A police accident investigator was sent to the scene to determine how the collision took place.
