THIEVES stole £11,000 worth of watches, earrings and gold rings from a city jewellers during a smash and grab raid at night, a jury heard.

They broke the display window of Nigel Dunn in Chapel Walk, CrownGate, on Monday, March 31 this year.

Two men were arrested - wearing rings from the raid - after a woman gave police information that one man, Steve Cherry, had moved into her flat a few weeks earlier, said Pardeep Tiwana, prosecuting.

Cherry and Anthony Moxon had returned to her home out of breath on the night of the break-in. Police searched the premises and found jewellery hidden under a bed.

Fragments of glass found in Moxon's clothing matched glass from the broken window, Worcester Crown Court heard.

Moxon, aged 26, of Eastbank Drive, Worcester, denies burglary. The jury was told that Cherry had pleaded guilty to the raid before the trial began.

The raiders were hooded and wore dark clothing to avoid detection when they broke two holes in the shop window around 11.50pm.

A couple out walking heard the glass being smashed, then saw the raiders jogging along High Street. The man followed them on a bike, but lost sight of them in Park Street.

Mr Tiwana said a poor quality video showed the raid taking place.

Cherry and Moxon met at the woman's flat in Nightingale House that night, before leaving 20 minutes before the raid, the jury heard.

Next day, Moxon was arrested in a car near the flat wearing a watch worth £750. Cherry was also picked up with a £2,300 watch.

Mr Tiwana said when Moxon was interviewed he had three fresh grazes on his left forearm. It was alleged he cut himself as he reached in for the jewellery.

The trial continues.
