AN unusual item was mentioned in the Malvern News a century ago.
"Mr Clive of the Exchange, Malvern, has secured a novelty which is remarkably interesting," the paper reported.
"The said novelty came to him in a case of Mexican cigars just imported and consists of about 100 specimens of the Carpocarpaa Saltitans, or Jumping Bean.
"An animated vegetable is worth going some distance to see and Mr Clive is in a position to show you a bean which will go on rolling, turning and jumping until next May.
"We have Mr Clive's authority for saying that he will be delighted to show them to anyone who feels sufficiently interested to call and see them."
