"SMASH in Church Street" was one of the headlines in the Malvern News a hundred years ago.

The story described how a "motor bicycle" crashed into Messrs Jones and Davis, grocers, breaking two windows.

The machine was being ridden by Mr Horace Berry of Orleans House, who had just taken it around the hills and returned to the town centre by way of Graham Road.

"The machine had only been out a few times and its owner, being anxious to test its hill-climbing powers, endeavoured to turn the corner by Beauchamp House, with a view of riding up Church Street.

"For some reason, Mr Berry failed to negotiate the corner successfully and ran with great force against the shop front."

Mr Berry suffered a cut face and "was for a time in a dazed condition", while the motorcycle suffered a buckled wheel and the shop was "greatly inconvenienced".
