unless amended, the European Commission proposals for animal transport published on July 16 will force the UK to drop its ban on the export of live horses, donkeys and ponies to the continent, where they will be slaughtered for meat.

The proposals also recommend for all live animal exports a nine hour journey followed by a 12 hour rest. Incidentally, this rest can be while on board ship and this can be repeated ad infinitum.

As it stands this is a licence to expand suffering. Compassion in World Farming is demanding a total journey time of eight hours and a reinstatement of our ban on the export of live horses and donkeys for slaughter.

CIWF supporters will be at the Animal Charities Fair at the Lyttelton Well, Malvern, on October 4 and again in Church Street on October 25. Please come and add your support, sign our petitions etc.

A delegation from CIWF will be going to Brussels in November. This could be our last chance to change things for years to come.
