INCREASED funding will help create a more modern, integrated and efficient local health service, according to South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust.

The organisation has just published its first annual report and accounts.

In his report, chairman David Barlow laid out the PCT's vision for the health service locally and said an unprecedented increase in funding of more than 30 per cent, due in stages by March 2006, would greatly enhance its work.

The PCT now controls 75 per cent of health spending in south Worcestershire, commissioning services for local people from hospitals and directly providing services in community hospitals and areas like health visiting, district nursing and dentistry.

Mr Barlow said the organisation was determined to build on its start and improve its one star health service rating. He said the first year had been "extremely challenging", in particular balancing the finances, having inherited a £5 million deficit.

Outlining the work of the trust this year, the report highlighted the launch of the Sole Mates 'walking to health' project in September in Malvern and the lottery award to support the Green Gym project in the town.
