A FORMER John Masefield High School pupil has been put in charge of a Royal Navy destroyer.

Matt Harvey has been named commander of the HMS York, based in Portsmouth.

Commander Harvey joined the Navy in 1985, the same year that HMS York came into service, training ashore at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

He then took on a number of bridge watch-keeping appointments before becoming executive officer on HMS Dumbarton Castle.

Most recently Commander Harvey joined HMS Cardiff as executive officer and second in command, before becoming the commanding officer of HMS York.

His sister, Liz Harvey, said: "It's a great achievement. He's certainly worked hard for it."

n THE commander of HMS Ledbury has spoken of the boost in morale that letters from Ledbury people gave his crew during the war in Iraq. Lt Cmdr Peter Olive visited the town this week to discuss plans for a visit by the crew later this month.
