A FAREWELL gathering was held in Ledbury for a contractor who has looked after the town for more than 20 years.

John Hiles retired on Tuesday, the day after a lunch was held in his honour by his employers, Ledbury Town Council.

Mr Hiles, who lives in Malvern, has maintained the recreation ground, cut the grass and looked after Ledbury's two cemeteries and churchyard. He also looks after Dog Hill Wood, which he will continue to do.

The council presented Mr Hiles with a painting of Dog Hill Wood, commissioned from local artist Hilda Hawcutt.

Mayor Keith Francis said: "He's been a friend rather than an employee for over 20 years. He's got outstanding knowledge of the area and will be missed."
