Retiring joiner Ray Marsh was unaware that a project he was working on was to be dedicated to him.

It was only after he had finished restoring a bench outside the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street, Malvern, that he realised that the plaque to be fixed to the back of the seat had his name on it.

The plaque was presented to Mr Marsh by Malvern Hills District Council.

Mr Marsh, of Wells Joinery, retired recently after 30 years. The council has used the firm as contractors for the past 13 years.

"I was repairing the seat and they said there's a sign to go on it," said Mr Marsh.

"I put it in my pocket but when I saw what it was I said 'I'm not putting that on there.' Eventually I had to, although I am a bit embarrassed."

Dave Hawley, technical services manager at Malvern Hills District Council, said: "We thought it would be a nice gesture to give Ray the plaque. Putting it on was the last job he did for us.

"Everybody knows Ray as he's done work in all the council's buildings. We're just grateful for all his efforts and his good work."

Wells Joinery boss Brian Handy, who has known Mr Marsh since they attended Manor Park School together more than 50 years ago, said he could not have wished for a better employee.

"He's a good faithful worker and a good mate as well," he said.
