A GREEN-fingered granddad from Franche is celebrating winning a trophy for the best allotment in Wyre Forest.

Ray McTear, of Wilton Avenue, said he was thrilled his Franche estate allotment had been crowned best on site and best in show at the annual presentation held by Wyre Forest District Council last Friday.

The 64-year-old, who owns Gaytsmaid Wrought Iron in Bewdley, added he was shocked when he found out he had won the award at the ceremony held at Stourport Boat Club .

"I only spend about five hours a week there so I'm surprised I won it," the grandfather-of-six said.

"I grow all the vegetables you can grow including cabbages, carrots, potatoes, beetroot and beans, as well as flowers and fruit."

He added tending his crops at weekends was a way of relaxing after a busy week's work.

"I have had my allotment for five years and spend Saturday and Sunday mornings there and some summer evenings. It's not just a hobby but a way to relax away from the business."

He added his wife Sheila helps out on the allotment and his three children and their families enjoyed eating his produce.
