RUSH hour rail services in Wyre Forest were shut down on Monday after a man died when he was hit by a train.

Some 3,000 people were forced on to a fleet of 12 buses following the death just outside Kidderminster station at about 4pm.

Sgt Clare Bonsall of British Transport Police, which has launched an inquiry, said: "We don't believe there were any suspicious circumstances. We don't believe anyone else was involved."

The man - who was in his 20s but has not been identified - was struck by the 3.37pm Worcester Shrub Hill to Birmingham New Street Central Trains service about 200 yards before it reached the platform.

Sgt Bonsall added: "There's fencing along the railway but I believe it's not been accessed over the fence. It's quite easy to gain access to the railway from the station itself."

Network Rail spokeswoman Michelle Conaboy said the victim had stepped out in front of the train.

"At 4.35pm the British Transport Police arrived and interviewed the driver. They ruled out it being suspicious."

Services between Stourbridge Junction and Worcester Shrub Hill were not restored in both directions until 6.25pm and 15 trains had to be diverted.

Central Trains station services manager Russell Price said the network was back to normal by 7.30pm.

Paramedics treated the train driver for shock at the scene.
