JUDO: Veteran Sue Cosnett has become Samurai Judo Club's latest national success after winning the British Veterans Championships in Norwich.

At the same time, the club's juniors dominated the British Kata Championships' junior section, winning gold and silver in both categories.

Competing in the light-middleweight U-63kg category, Cosnett started well and impressive groundwork earned her a place in the final.

She faced probably Britain's toughest veteran, a current and five times world winner who has been undefeated for some years.

But Cosnett and her coach worked out a good tactical approach and soon had her opponent under enough pressure to concede a penalty.

Cosnett, who recently won a bronze in the World Veteran Championships, continued to dominate the contest and there was no way back for the other competitor.

She now sets her sights on the European Veterans next spring followed by the Worlds next year in Austria.

But the travelling is expensive and the club are looking for a sponsor to help her.

Samurai, who organised the first women's veterans contest in Great Britain a decade ago, also saw Mike Waldron take a bronze in the men's U-81kg category.

Meanwhile, the juniors went to Wycombe to take part in kata, the non-competitive form of judo which concentrates on the skill of a formal display.

After dominating Midlands kata for some time, they impressed the national judges and adult competitors with a great display.

In the younger juniors, brother-and-sister Karl and Amber Gaughan did well for a silver medal.

They were edged out by Tom Walker and Greg Oertel who took gold.

Walker became the first junior to hold both the competitive British title and the kata accolade.

He partnered sister Kate in the older juniors and achieved another record as they claimed a silver.

T Walker was the first person to win a national medal at the same time as both the thrower and the thrown player.

Gold went to another Samurai pair, Ben Newbury and Benjy Connor, with a spot-on rendering of the techniques.

They added the British junior title to the Midland Open success several months ago.
