A SINGING star who has given up days and nights galore to raise thousands of pounds for children with cancer has been hailed for his efforts.

Country and western singer Billy Farnsworth has spent 31 years hosting an annual cabaret night in aid of Sargent Cancer Care charity, which provides respite homes for families.

He also now co-ordinates dozens of "roadshows" around the country to raise money for the charity and, in the past two years alone, has handed over a staggering £22,000.

Modest Billy has now been recognised for his dedication, becoming the latest monthly winner of the Three Cheers Awards, organised by the Shuttle/Times and News in association with sponsors Wyre Forest Community Housing, who provide a £100 cash prize.

Billy said: "I have been fortunate in my life and I wanted to give something back - and there are no more worthy charities than one which helps children with leukaemia and other cancers."

Ray Brooks, chief executive of Wyre Forest Community Housing, said Billy was a worthy winner because he sacrificed so much time and energy to help a wonderful cause.

Lorry driver Billy, 59, of Earnley Close, The Walshes, Stourport, performed regularly with successful country and western band Shiloh throughout the 1970s and 80s.

When the band began to wind down, Billy decided to devote himself to raising even more money for Sargent Cancer Care, a charity he first came across through an old schoolfriend whose daughter died of leukaemia.

He now performs at working men's clubs and cabaret venues around the country, handing over his fee and any money raised through raffles and other fund-raising on the night to the charity.

Helping him put on a spectacular show are his friend Christine McCarthy, supported by his grandchildren Suzanne, 15, and Kimberley, 12, who perform under the name Shimmer.

The national charity, whose former patrons included Princess Diana, has a respite holiday home for families of children with cancer, and also supports young adults recovering from leukaemia by providing them with career training.

l The annual Sargent Christmas Roadshow, hosted by Billy and his team, takes place at The Gilt Edge Social Club at Oldington on November 30 from noon to 4pm, featuring a line-up of top artists and including a comedian, live band and dancers. Every penny raised during the family event will go to Sargent Cancer Care. Tickets are available from the venue or from Billy on 01299 871666.
