ON September 16, two members gave lectures.

First, Chris Lane talked about Ethiopia. She was sent there by Save the Children Fund, for whom she was working, to look over their various projects, which range from the supply of water to health clinics and education for the disabled.

There were a lot of views of the very dry and difficult terrain and pictures of the people and their houses, which ranged from traditional huts to shacks in the towns.

The message that came across very powerfully was the gratitude of the people for all that was being done for them and their cheerfulness under such adversity.

They feel they are making good progress when they only have to walk three hours for water instead of having to leave home for three days as they did before.

The second lecture was by Ray Davies on wildlife photography.

He showed views of kingfishers and other birds, a lot of which had to be taken with a large lens from a hide. Also seals and their babies, red squirrels together with moths and butterflies.

Ray pointed out that not all wildlife photography is difficult. Whereas some requires sitting in a hide or getting up at dawn, some can be carried out by just a trip to a local field.
