DOOR staff working at town centre nightspots may have to undergo proper training to enable them to provide support to the police.

The introduction of a door staff registration scheme has been listed as one of several things Redditch Town Centre Partnership, which includes the council and police, could do to improve and enhance the evening economy.

The proposals have been drawn up as part of a town centre strategy produced by consultants Chesterton on behalf of Redditch Council.

And last night, councillors on the regeneration services overview and scrutiny committee were set to agree to the final strategy and action plan.

The strategy states: "The overall improvement of the evening economy is a fundamental part of the future diversification of the town centre.

"It will probably be more beneficial to develop a more detailed evening economy action plan which deals with all aspects of stimulating future activity."

Suggestions include spending up to £10,000 producing a guide to pubs, eating places and activities and a publicity campaign emphasising how safe the town centre is at night following the installation of CCTV.

The creation of an evening economy zone focused on Alcester Street and Church Green and the installation of more CCTV cameras have also been proposed.
