MOVES to fill a skills shortage within the construction industry in Redditch are being stepped up with a week-long event at Church Hill Community Centre.
School pupils will be able to try their hand at bricklaying, carpentry and plumbing as part of National Construction Week.
It is the first time such an event has been held in Redditch.
Project manager Ray O' Connor, of the Construction Industry Training Board, said: "These sessions allow children to have first-hand experience of construction and give them an insight into career paths.
"The skills shortage in the construction industry has been widely publicised and we hope this will raise awareness of career possibilities and, ultimately, impact on the problem in Redditch."
The event, spearheaded by Redditch Council, runs from Thursday, October 9 to Thursday, October 16, at the Loxley Close centre.
The council has set up three apprenticeships in building and carpentry and will be there on October 15 offering young people the chance to apply. Redditch MP Jacqui Smith will be at an award ceremony on Friday, October 17.
