CERTAIN narrow-minded people of the Northwick Road area of Worcester should remember that the Northwick Theatre was built in 1938 well before half of the surrounding houses had even gone to the planning stage.

When Ian Perks bought the Northwick in 1991, not only did he save the building from certain death, but with his own money he gave the people of Worcester a wonderful music venue, not just for the young to enjoy but also for the young at heart.

He spent many thousands of pounds restoring the building inside and out back to its former glory.

A special team from London came and took samples of the then revolting paintwork (as left by Mecca bingo) to discover the original colours of the theatre.

Mr Perks also went to great lengths to find the carpet firm that originally made the carpets and again spent thousands of pounds recreating the art deco look created by John Alexander.

People of Worcester including the Northwick/Ombersley Road area were very excited about the transformation of the theatre, and on opening night, the first artiste to perform at the new Northwick played to a full capacity crowd.

As from that first night, not only have top named artists graced Worcester with truly magnificent performances, but many of the more obscure artists have, thanks to the Northwick, had a chance to further their careers after playing the venue.

Mr Perks also held many performances in aid of local charities and had Sunday drama workshop for all ages.

Again, this was giving the young people of Worcester a place to do something constructive not destructive.

So please can someone call for the Northwick to be put back to the use that it was originally built for, a music hall.

The Mayor of Worcester is hell-bent on seeing the destruction of a truly historical and magical building.

Surely he should be saving part of Worcester's great history.
