IT is disappointing to hear David Blunkett seeming to succumb to an attack of Blairitis and it is to be hoped that it does not become chronic.

He says he is "determined" to get through Parliament the Identity Card Bill when it would have been encouraging to hear him talk about the issue being subject to the democratic process.

If neither Parliament nor the bulk of the Labour party membership sees any value in this, whether he is determined or laid back about it ought not to be the point.

The point ought to be, is it broadly welcomed as value for money and workable?

Mr Blair's major and pathological weakness seems to me his excessive certainty.

It rings alarm bells and raises doubts. There needs to be a vaccine.

WENDY HANDS,

Upton-upon-Severn.
