MATT Birch is lucky to be alive after being crushed between two lorries.

The Bromsgrove RFC First XV star was trapped by the vehicles at work.

Fly half Birch was walking across a yard when one lorry started to turn, pinning him against the side of a stationery vehicle.

He was taken to hospital with a suspected broken pelvis but was released with just bruising. The incident happened on Thursday, August 21.

Bromsgrove coach Dean Ball said: "It was a near fatality and it was very lucky.

"It wasn't a fair fight, Matt against two lorries and he came out the worse for wear."

The accident keeps the fly half, and the team's primary goal kicker, out of this Saturday's Midlands Two (West) opener against Hereford at Finstall Park (3pm).

"Matt will be out for at least two to three weeks," Ball added.

Birch has not been the most fortunate when it comes to injuries, having being plagued by a back problem during last season.
