BROMSGROVE RFC First XV eventually let their superiority shine through as they defeated Nuneaton Old Edwardians 27-19 at Finstall Park.

Dean Ball's side made life difficult for themselves last Saturday, trailing until the latter stages, but showed great character in fighting back.

Ball said: "As usual we made it hard work and they weren't a particularly good side and we made them look good but the result was there and that's what matters."

The coach also singled out Jon Taylor for his work in the lineout, which also led to Town's fourth and final try.

Nuneaton outweighed the Bromsgrove pack but it took 30 minutes and a 9-0 deficit before the hosts started to exert any forward dominance.

Bromsgrove's first try came after an opportunistic charge down by returning skipper Dave Clark forced an infringement and provided a comfortable penalty kick opportunity. Clarke bravely chose to go for the try and was rewarded when Danny Malin broke through the line and fed Richard Newman who finished in style. The conversion was missed.

Nuneaton started the second half well and sustained pressure combined with nave infringements by Bromsgrove led to a penalty and a seven point lead.

The hosts countered quickly and levelled in a move initiated by man of the match Ross Baxter. His break was followed by an excellent driven maul before Taylor and Danny Malin forced Nuneaton to concede a penalty. Quick thinking Lee Wainright immediately took the penalty and with support outside made a short dash to score. Dave Wellavize converted.

Bromsgrove then edged ahead with a penalty but were then let off the hook when Nuneaton, fighting hard, missed four penalties in succession.

A mistake in the Bromsgrove dead ball area then gifted Nuneaton a try under the posts for a 19-15 lead.

Bromsgrove were up against it until Wainright sensed a gap behind the opposition and deftly chipped the ball into space and Wellavize won the chase to touch down in the corner and add the conversion.

Town added to the lead when Taylor rose above the Nuneaton line out to steal their ball. Sensing glory the pack drove the ensuing maul towards and over the opposition try line with Richard Arnold emerging the scorer.

Soon after, in one of the best moves of the match, Bromsgrove came within a whisker of another try but a midfield break from Baxter failed to find Richard Trigg.

Bromsgrove Seconds thrashed Malvern 50-0.
