September was the sunniest month on record in the Midlands and the driest since 1997, it was revealed today.

The sun shone brightly for an average of six hours a day - the best figure since records began in 1961, and an average of just 33mm of rain fell during the entire month - 58 per cent less than average.

But if the rest of the Midlands fared well with the weather, Worcester and Hereford did even better.

Some places in the two counties saw just five or six millimetres of rain in the month, and temperatures were at their warmest since at least 1968, according to Evening News weatherman Paul Damari.

"It was the hottest September since I've started keeping records in the area, so it could go back even further than this," he said.
