WORCESTER Wolves began the new National Basketball League Division Two season in style with a 127-76 win over Tamar Valley in Plymouth.

Wolves travelled without the injured Colin Rhooms, Paul Gerald and Dean Blake. Ross Cooney and Rhys Hocking were recalled to the team.

Tamar included two new American signings, Poole and Hayes and Hayes opened with two long range three-pointers.

Wolves responded immediately with Ty Shaw scoring 10 points in four minutes. Dave Jones added a three-pointer as Wolves led 23-12 after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the introduction of player-coach Rick Solvason and he wasted no time in finding his range, scoring 13 points within six minutes including three three-pointers.

Colin Chiverton and Shaw were dominant with rebounding and Wayne Robinson piled more pressure on the hosts with sound long range shooting. At half time Wolves led 60-34.

The only concern for Wolves lay in the three personal fouls for Josh Cooprider. But in the second half he came out determined and gave an excellent display of long-range shooting. Chiverton, Shaw and Hocking continued to dominate the boards and Luke Sommerville worked tirelessly to maintain the defensive intensity.

Wolves scored 10 three-point shots and made 19 out of a possible 20 free throws. Matt Wurmli maintained the onslaught as Wolves ended with the biggest win in their three-year history.

Chiverton top scored with 29 points backed up by Shaw (25), Solvason (25) and Cooprider (20). The rebounding was dominated by Shaw (19), Chiverton (18) and Sommerville (10).

Coach Jimmy Smith said: "Offensively, we have several options and we executed them well. We need to continue to work on our defensive play."

Wolves visit Coventry Crusaders this Saturday in the Patrons Cup (7.30).
