A WORCESTERSHIRE fruit farm is celebrating a double success after harvesting a bumper crop this year - and scooping two prestigious prizes.

Broomfield's, of School Plantation, Holt Heath, near Worcester, won the Perpetual Challenge trophy at the Malvern Autumn Garden and Country Show for most marks gained by a fruit farm.

Fruit exhibitors were judged on the quality, appearance and firmness of their product.

Broomfield's also pipped about 45 other entries to win the silver plate for best exhibitor in the apples and pears section of the show, held at Malvern's Three Counties showground at the weekend, with its Cox's orange pippin.

"We're delighted - we've never done so well," said co-owner Colin Broomfield. "We're thrilled to bits."

Mr Broomfield and his wife Fiona, both aged 36, have been running the family farm together for 10 years and have 55,000 trees on 80 acres.

This year, the farm, which employs 40 people, has picked a record seven million apples - a 25 per cent increase on last year.

"We're really pleased with how much we picked and it's great to hear some good news from the country," said Mrs Broomfield.

The Broomfields have had fruit in the family since 1910.

The farm grows 30 different varieties of apples, which it stocks in its farm shop as well as supplying Safeway, Morrisons, and Marks & Spencer.
