A MAN died after he was hit by a train at Kidderminster railway station.

The train was travelling from Worcester to Kidderminster when the tragedy occurred at around 4pm yesterday.

Commuters making their way home were standing at the platform at Kidderminster Railway station when the Asian man was struck about 100 yards from the platform.

The fire brigade sent out two fire engines from Kidderminster and an incident support unit from Droitwich after receiving a phone call from the ambulance.

British Transport Police is currently investigating the incident.

"There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances," said Chief Inspector Colin Edwards, of the transport police.

Firefighters and Railtrack staff took a matter of minutes to release the body of the man, who had already died, from under the front of the train.

"It's an unfortunate incident," said sub-officer Pete Smith from Kidderminster Fire Station.

"It was not pleasant for anybody who dealt with it or witnessed it."

Kidderminster fire crews returned to their station at 6.40pm.

Police said a considerable number of people would have been standing at the platform at the time and are urging them to come forward.
