A MATCH-winning performance by former Kidderminster Harriers midfielder Sean Flynn inspired Evesham United to a well deserved 1-0 victory against high riding Solihull Borough in the Dr Martens League Western Division.

Flynn marked his surprise inclusion in the Robins' line-up with the only goal of the game after 74 minutes.

There seemed little danger when he brought the ball under control some 40 yards out but in a split second, he let fly with an unstoppable drive that flew past the bewildered Mike Payne and into the roof of the net.

It was no more than United deserved. They controlled the game throughout but a series of near misses and good saves by Payne looked as though Solihull were going to escape with a point.

Solihull were on the back foot from the start. Another newcomer, Danny Allen, signed on a month's loan from Forest Green, had an early free kick saved by Payne and then good work down the right between Grant Pinkney and Mark Shepherd ended with Pinkney firing inches over.

In a rare piece of action at the other end, Marc Burrow produced a brave last ditch tackle on Paul Hunter to prevent the former Evesham striker from turning in Andy Lovelock's cross.

Just before half-time, Payne smothered a shot at the feet of Shaun Pratt and then watched Inderpaul Khela's header flash just wide of an upright.

The opening minute of the second half saw Pratt faced with only Payne to beat, but the 'keeper did well to beat away his goalbound shot.

Soon after, Payne made an identical save from Khela who had burst through the overworked Solihull defence.

But with the clock ticking down, Flynn produced a moment to savour to hand United their first win for three games.
