WORCESTERSHIRE off-spinner Gareth Batty has been called into England's one-day squad for the first half of the triangular series as a replacement for the injured Jeremy Snape.

Batty earns his call-up after impressing at the Academy in Adelaide and will join up with the rest of the squad for tomorrow's match against a Prime Minister's XI in Canberra.

He takes over from Snape, who broke his right thumb batting in England's eight-wicket warm-up match defeat against New South Wales on Friday.

Yorkshire off-spinner Richard Dawson will also play a couple of one-day games for club sides as an insurance against further injuries, while Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Chris Read has also been called into the squad from the Academy.

Batty stands a chance of featuring in tomorrow's game as the tourists attempt to give every member of the squad a run-out before the one-day series starts.

But England captain Nasser Hussain is poised to miss out in Canberra with a thigh strain. He sustained the injury during the tourists' defeat by Australia 'A' iand is likely to be rested to ensure he is fit for Friday's opening match of the triangular tournament at the SCG.

Marcus Trescothick, who was rested for yesterday's 23-runs setback, will return to captain the side in his absence.

"I don't think it's a major problem with Nasser," explained Tres-cothick, who will also try to bat himself out of a poor run of form. "It's a minor thing that we're keeping an eye on.

The left-hander is expected to lead a side without wicketkeeper Alec Stewart, who is likely to be given a rest after playing in all but one match on the tour, to give Chris Read an opportunity after being called in from the Academy.
