THE world premiere of a new production of HMS Pinafore kicks off a Gilbert and Sullivan double bill at Malvern Theatres.

The operetta, which takes a satirical swipe at the English class system, will be followed by Gilbert and Sullivan's equally famous show, The Pirates of Penzance.

Both productions are being staged by the Carl Rosa Opera Company, which was last in Malvern two years ago with an earlier production of Pirates.

The new production of HMS Pinafore will be the first time acclaimed actor Timothy West, who appeared in Malvern in the title role of King Lear last September, has directed Gilbert and Sullivan.

Heading the cast is Colin Baker, best known for his role as Dr Who in the mid 80s, as Sir Joseph Porter. The cast is supported by a 24-strong orchestra conducted by Richard Balcombe.

The production also marks the professional debut of Margaret Rapacioli (Hebe) and John Foley (Chorus), finalists in Channel 4 show Operatunity.

HMS Pinafore - or The Lass That Loved a Sailor, to give it its full title - runs at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday to Saturday, July 22 to 26.

Two days later, The Pirates of Penzance swashbuckle on to the stage, fresh from a tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Appearing for one night only will be Rebecca Knight, half of sexy classical cross-over act Operababes, as Mable on Thursday July 31.

For the rest of the run Lesley Cox will play the role, and Rebecca's mum Gillian Knight will play the role of Ruth.

Pirates runs at Malvern from Monday to Thursday, July 28 to 31.

Tickets for each production are £14 to £20, with a special offer to see both shows for £28, from the box office on 01684 892277.
