IN April you published a photograph of about 30 people who were taking part in a vigil on Belle Vue Island. These people were expressing their misgivings about the war in Iraq. They acknowledged the despotic nature of Saddam Hussein's regime, but they did not believe that Iraq posed a threat to Britain. They doubted if an attack on Iraq would increase security in the world. They doubted if the Iraqis would welcome occupation by foreign troops. The present situation in Iraq suggests these doubts were justified.
