A BRITISH lumberjack champion will be chopping trees for charity when he helps drum up funds for an ultrasound scanner.

Spike Milton, who is the reigning underhand champion for Britain, will be defending his title at the Clifton upon Teme Country Fair.

The British Lumberjack Sports Association will be holding a British Championship together with competitions and events, on Saturday, August 9.

All funds from the event will go towards a £15,000 portable ultrasound scanner for patients at Knightwick and Great Witley surgeries.

Mr Milton, aged 36, is this year's reigning underhand champion for the Speed Chop, a technique which involves the lumberjack standing on a block of wood and chopping through the timber grain.

Mr Milton, who recently returned from Europe after breaking two European Lumberjack records has also won the title for British Standing Block, which involves simulating the felling of a tree, and the Single Saw.

"The fair will help raise money towards the scanner for the surgeries in Knightwick and Witley," he said.

"There will also be a vintage tractor rally and terrier racing."

Visitors to the fair, which starts at 10.30am, will also be able to enjoy displays of classic motorcycles, a tug of war, stalls , country crafts and a barbecue.

"Other GP practices in the country have an ultrasound scanner, but practices in Herefordshire and Worcestershire do not," said Dr Andrew Bywater of The Surgery, Knightwick.

Entry for the fair, which takes place on Blue Shot Meadow, is £4 for adults, and £2 for children and senior citizens, and free entry for children.
