MARTIN Weir has scooped a double in Worcester City's player of the year awards.

The former Kidderminster Harriers defender, who has played a major role in steering City clear of relegation danger, won the votes of both the supporters and his fellow players.

Manager John Barton paid warm tribute to Weir's efforts, saying: "It is fully justified and deserved.

"We have had many good contributions from players and Martin has been outstanding.

"He hasn't disappointed me since I came to the club through his attitude, application and love of playing the game and still wanting to do well.

"His character is exactly what every manager wants. If we had a dressing room full of Martin Weirs, life would be a damn sight easier."

Barton also praised the efforts of Steve Lutz, who took the young player of the year prize after impressing in a variety of roles.

"I think our fighting spirit was instigated by him initially.

"When he played up front with Mark Owen, he led from the front in his own way, and the amount of work he put in was phenomenal and set a level for everybody who played behind him to follow."

Terry Croad was named as clubman of the year for his sterling work with the club's Superpool lottery.

All prizewinners received their awards before the home game with Dorchester Town.
