DROITWICH Spa golf professional John Bickerton will miss the 132nd Open Championship starting tomorrow (Thursday) after turning down the chance to qualify.

Bickerton, from Upton Warren, missed the cut at last week's Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond after finishing the first two rounds five over par.

Failing to make the cut meant the 33-year-old would have had to travel with his family from Scotland to Sandwich, in Kent, for a qualification tournament just 24 hours later.

John is instead enjoying a week off before turning his attention to the 1.8million euros Nissan Irish Open at Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin, starting on Thursday, July 24.
