A CAMPAIGNING, blind Spa resident has won his battle to have a telegraph pole removed and kerbs dropped outside his home.

Keith Harrison, who began losing his sight while serving in the Merchant Navy, has fought a long, hard battle with British Telecom, Droitwich Town Council and Wychavon District Council to make life easier for handicapped residents in the Spa.

After years of letters and phone calls, the 79-year-old resident from Burrish Street is pleased action has finally been taken.

He said: "The post is about five yards away from my house and I was constantly banging into the post and injuring myself.

"I had to walk into the main road, where cars are travelling quite fast to go around it." He added although he was still hindered by cars parked half on the pavement, the dropped kerbs had proved a great benefit.

Work is still being carried out but he claimed they had helped not only himself but his wife, Marjory who is wheelchair bound.

Although happier, Mr Harrison claims he would like more action to help those with disabilities: "I believe handicapped residents get a raw deal in Droitwich Spa and I have been campaigning for years to put things right in this town."

Former town council leader Cllr Peter Pinfield, (Droitwich Spa East-Lab) said: "We are pleased to see some of Mr Harrison's issues have been resolved.

"But as with all matters these things do take a little time. Things have improved a great deal over the years, we have cut back bushes, introduced dropped kerbs and had a go at car parking issues.

"If Mr Harrison or others have a problem with road design they can approach me, so I can bring it to the attention of the appropriate officer."
