POLICE are calling for Spa kids to play safe this summer and ensure it does not become a season of tragedy on the roads.

Tragedy

The message comes a year after the tragic death of Droitwich Spa High School pupil, Josh Simpson, struck by an articulated lorry on the northbound carriageway of the A38 in July 2002.

Traffic Management Advisor, Mike Digger said: "The holidays are a time for enjoyment; but, unfortunately, with more young people out and about in the community there is a greater potential for incidents involving death or injury.

"It is important that drivers remain alert, particularly in residential areas, for children out playing in the street, riding their bikes or using skateboards. These days, mobile phones are an added distraction for youngsters, causing them to be less aware of traffic while they are engaged in a call or texting a message.

He said it is important that motorists are aware of what is happening ahead of them and they ensure they remain within speed limits.

Responsibility

Mike added parents and others responsible for children also had a responsibility to reinforce the message for youngsters to be aware of traffic while they are out and about and in particular, to take care when crossing the road.

"We all have a part to play in ensuring that the summer holidays are not wrecked by more deaths and injuries among young people during the coming weeks. We can do this by taking extra care on the roads and raising road safety awareness among children," he added.
