PERSHORE Town Football Club is mourning one of its greatest stalwarts.

Cyril Milward died suddenly at the weekend aged 79 after collapsing at a function at the club.

He had been Town's press officer for many years, contributing match reports to various newspapers including the Evening News.

Mr Milward had been involved with football in the town for over 50 years. He spent several years as manager of Pershore United, one of the three clubs who merged to form Pershore Town in 1988, and also served United as secretary and chairman.

He was also chairman of the Pershore Hospital Cup competition.

Pershore club chairman Anthony Cosnett said: "He was a busy and loyal servant to the club for many years and also with Pershore United.

"People like Cyril are very difficult to replace. He was a top guy and was so dedicated to the club.

"We offer our deepest sympathy to his wife and the family."

Former Town manager Colin Shepherd said: "He very rarely missed a game and he was always there helping and doing his bit for the club.

"He was very interested in the club and was always talking football, and his contribution to the club and the town was immense."

Worcestershire Football Association secretary Mervyn Leggett said he spoke to Mr Milward only last week about the proposed revival of the Pershore club's floodlit competition.

He added: "Cyril was a true gentleman. He served the game with great distinction for many years in various capacities.

"He will be sadly missed by his many friends both inside and outside football."

Mr Milward leaves a wife Phyllis, children Sandra, Carol and Philip and several grandchildren.

His funeral will be held at Pershore Abbey next Monday (July 21) at 11.30am.
