WORCESTER City manager John Barton is closing in on his first signing of the summer.

The St George's Lane boss is in advanced talks with a player and is hopeful of concluding the deal, possibly by next week.

"I think we are nearly there and I've been encouraged by his response," said Barton who met another transfer target last night.

"We are certainly looking to bring in at least three new players but, with last season's injured players coming back, that will feel like having new signings too."

Barton is still waiting to finalise a pre-season friendly with Wolves, but expects Molineux boss Dave Jones to send a squad featuring many of the play-off team.

Meanwhile, Barton will have the chance to renew rivalries with new Weymouth player-manager Steve Claridge when the two clubs meet next season.

The pair crossed swords during the mid-1980s when Barton was at Kidderminster Harriers and Claridge was starting out at Weymouth on an eventful career that took him to numerous clubs including most recently Millwall.
